About BrightLending
We are an independent financial content publisher. Our mission is simple: give ordinary Americans the clear, honest information they need to make smart borrowing decisions — before they sign anything.
Our Story
BrightLending was founded after seeing how many borrowers — particularly those with limited credit options — were signing loan agreements they did not fully understand. The fine print was there. The APR was disclosed. But nobody had translated what those numbers actually meant in dollars and cents.
A $500 loan that costs $2,945 to repay is not just an expensive loan. For someone living paycheck to paycheck, it can be the beginning of a debt spiral that takes years to escape. We started this site because we believed those borrowers deserved the same quality of financial information that wealthier consumers take for granted.
Today, BrightLending publishes in-depth reviews, borrower guides, and financial education resources written by credentialed finance professionals and reviewed by a licensed attorney. Every article on this site exists to help someone make a better-informed decision — even if that decision is to not take out a loan at all.
Editorial Independence
BrightLending operates independently of the lenders we review. No lender can pay to improve their rating, alter the content of a review, or prevent us from publishing negative findings. Our editorial team makes all content decisions without input from any third-party financial company.
We do participate in affiliate programs, which means we may earn a commission if a reader clicks a link and takes out a loan with a lender we review. This is disclosed clearly on every page. However:
- Affiliate relationships never influence our editorial ratings or written assessments.
- We review lenders we are not affiliated with, including those we recommend against using.
- Our writers are salaried — they are not compensated based on which lenders readers choose.
- Negative reviews are published and maintained even when they may reduce affiliate earnings.
If you ever believe our editorial content has been compromised, we encourage you to contact us directly at cs1@getbrightlending.com.
Our Review Methodology
Every lender review published on BrightLending follows the same structured process:
- Primary source research: We read the lender's full loan agreement, fee schedule, and terms of service — not secondary summaries.
- Real cost calculation: We calculate the actual total repayment for representative loan amounts using the lender's own stated APR, not best-case estimates.
- Regulatory analysis: We identify the legal framework under which the lender operates — state-licensed, federally chartered, or tribal — and explain what protections borrowers do and do not have.
- Customer complaint review: We analyze patterns in complaints filed with the BBB, CFPB complaint database, Trustpilot, and major Reddit communities including r/personalfinance and r/povertyfinance.
- Alternative comparison: Every review includes a section on safer or cheaper alternatives, so readers have a complete picture before deciding.
- Legal review: Before publication, all rate disclosures, legal statements, and regulatory claims are verified by James R. Okoye, J.D., our legal content reviewer.
- Dated updates: Reviews are updated whenever material changes occur — new rates, state availability changes, or new regulatory actions — with the update date clearly marked.
Our scoring system evaluates lenders on five dimensions: Speed & Accessibility, Interest Rates, Transparency, Customer Satisfaction, and Value for Money. Each dimension is scored independently and combined into an overall rating out of 5.
Anti-Illegal Loans
BrightLending is firmly opposed to illegal lending practices and will never knowingly promote, link to, or recommend any lender operating outside applicable law.
We do not promote: Unlicensed lenders, loan sharks, lenders that charge rates exceeding applicable state caps without a valid legal basis, lenders that engage in deceptive collection practices, or any product that we reasonably believe is designed to trap borrowers in an unescapable debt cycle.
We review some high-cost legal lenders — including tribal lenders who operate under sovereign immunity — because our readers need to understand what these products actually cost. Reviewing a product is not the same as recommending it. We will always tell you when we believe a product should be avoided.
If you believe you are the victim of an illegal loan, we encourage you to contact your state's Attorney General, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) at consumerfinance.gov, or a nonprofit credit counselor.
